Title: In search of wildlife in Yellowstone NP
Country: United States
Category: Wildlife / Travel
Outline: Two friends visit Yellowstone National Park in Spring. They do a hike, see grizzlies, and attempt in vain to see wolves after hearing them howling at night. Driving in a car in heavy snow to a Yellowstone park gate that turns out to be closed, they help a guy whose snowmobile has broken down and who was being chased by a hungry bear. The article extolls the beauties of Yellowstone and has practical info on the park.

Category: Human interest / Travel Outline: The gaming capital of the world Las Vegas continuously re-invents itself to attract visitors. The family casino hotels of the nineties are giving way to new, bigger casino hotels with sophisticated entertainment and haute cuisine.

Title: Dutchies on the Everest
Country: Nepal and Tibet / China
Category: Mountaineering / History Outline: The extraordinary climbing history of the world’s highest mountain is central in this story. The last few decades witnessed a commercialization but also democratization of Everest climbs. Separate sections are about the first 12 Dutchies who successfully summitted Everest and how and why they succeeded. Another part is about the two different normal routes to the top, one from Nepal, the other from the Tibetan side.

Title: The Kenyan Rift Valley. A spectacular scenery of mountains and lakes

Outline: A road trip in Kenya takes readers from the Lake Turkana in the north to the southernmost Rift Valley Lake, Magadi. The differences between the 6 lakes visited are dealt with as well as their natural beauties. From the rugged North with its many nomadic tribes the journey continues to the more popular Lake Baringo and Lake Nakuru and ends on the shores of Lake Magadi.

Title: The enchantment of the Bazaruto Archipelago

Title: Malawi, the warm heart of Africa

Outline: A two–week journey takes two friends on a round-trip in Malawi. Next to the capital, they visit Liwonde National Park and Lake Malawi. A story of unique and typical drinks, beautiful scenery and proverbially friendly Malawians. Note is made that below the friendly surface there are tensions between the different tribes and that Malawi has its share of big city violence.

Title: Huayna Potosí: an easy climb
Country: Bolivia
Category: Mountaineering
Outline: The story details a 3-day climbing trip from the capital of Bolivia to the popular summit of Huayna Potosí in the nearby Cordillera Real. With relative ease, a height of almost 20,000 ft (over 6,000 m) is reached. The author takes one more day than is customary for this trip and pitches his tent at the old high camp, which sits almost 1,000 ft. higher than the one most mountaineers use nowadays.

Title: A Bolivian mountain adventure
Country: Bolivia

Outline: A couple does an high-altitude trekking in the northern Cordillera Real, followed by an attempt to reach the summit of Bolivia’s highest peak (21,463 ft (6,542 m)) in the Cordillera Occidental. Despite the height and a group of robbers around, they successfully complete the Illampu Cirquit trek in six days. They also reach the high camp of Nevado Sajama, but one of them doesn’t make it to the top.

Title: Illimani, mountaineering in the backyard of La Paz

Title: Los Llanos: exploring the Venezuelan lowlands
Country: Venezuela
Category: Wildlife / Nature / Travel
Outline: A journey from the city of Mérida over the Andes takes the narrator to the tropical and flat lowlands of Venezuela. In this huge wetland, the author encounters a number of extraordinary animals such as the giant anteater, the mata mata turtle, the anaconda, red ibises and hoatzins. The last paragraphs are devoted to the future of the Llanos under the presidency of Chávez.

Title: The National Road – America’s first highway
Country: United States

Outline: In the early 19th century the American federal government had an interstate road built from Maryland in the east to the present state of Illinois in the Midwest. Aiming to connect the east with new territories farther west, the project was slow-going and highly controversial. Once completed, the so-called National Road quickly deteriorated and soon became obsolete due to the rise of new means of transportation such as the railroad. Besides relating an interesting piece of American transportation history, the article sheds light on the mechanisms of the American political system.
